The Potential for Internet Dating

By Sian F Simpson

A large number of our day to day activities and chores can now be carried out online. We can shop on the internet, manage our money and our bank accounts and socialise with friends and family all from our computers. So it's no exaggeration to claim that the Internet has revolutionised the way we do many of our daily chores and tasks. Dating is not an exception to this rule!

Online dating has changed dating in general massively. There are quite literally an uncountable number of dating websites now and the number of people dating online is easily in its millions. But just why is the internet such an appealing dating platform?

Well, in the first instance it is the sheer number of people who are potentially available to talk to and even plan offline dates. If dating is, as so many claim, a numbers game then the Internet surely is the solution! There are literally millions of people from all over the world. This opens up a wealth of opportunity for singles to chat online to people they would otherwise probably have never come across in their life. People of all ages, of varying sexuality, different cultures, nationalities and lifestyles date online. This offers a diverse "pool" of potential dates for singles.

The other benefit is the relative safety of the internet. It is, of course, much safer to chat online than to meet a stranger "in the flesh." Many do go on to meet people they chat to online in real life. But the Internet gives them an opportunity to talk to people in relative anonymity and decide whether they would like to take it to an offline meeting. There's unrivalled potential to be able to learn about people before you meet them and to have a really good idea, very early on, as to whether they are the sort of person you would like to meet offline.

So online dating has huge potential for singles and it is fast being more socially acceptable for people to meet dates online. It's now very common for couples for openly admit to having first met through the Internet.
