By Jenny McKey

When two people fall in love, it can seem like the perfection of a new relationship will last forever. But the reality is, everyone starts to have a few problems after years of being married. When both partners are really interested in working hard to learn how to save a marriage, anything is possible.

Understanding each other is a vital step in making a relationship last. In most marriages, the partners feel that they always understand what is going on in each other's heads, so they can easily make wrong assumptions. Keeping the lines of communication open can help stop fights before they begin.

Avoid fighting by making your feelings clear. Identify reasons why you might have tension about a specific subject. Make boundaries and expectations crystal clear. Everyone should know that they are loved, and what is to be expected of them. Try to arrange rules and limits when both parties are in a good mood, otherwise, it may be hard to communicate rationally.

After being in a relationship for a long time, those who are married might feel like strangers. They might not know each other as well as they did when they first met because they have changed so much after childbirth and other milestones. Instead of focusing on loving a person for who they used to be, try to love them for who they truly are, and be accepting of them. Start to build new memories instead of relying on old ones.

Everyone has a busy schedules, and those who have kids almost never have a moment to themselves. Hire a babysitter, or send the children to a camp or group activity. Sports and clubs can help children grow socially and mentally, and will give the parents a chance to go out for a date. Even infants will be just fine for a few hours if they are left with grandparents or trusted neighbors.

Some marriages suffer just because of boredom. It is common for a couple to spend too much time together, and long for something new and exciting. But the problem is not the relationship. Many people will still find themselves bored and unsatisfied, even if they do opt for a divorce or separation. To solve the problem, find new activities together as well as separately for more stimulation.

Double dates are always interesting, and there is never a dull moment. Choose a couple that is light-hearted and fun to be around to inspire creativity and humor in your own relationship. Do not double date with a couple that could only be viewed as competition.
