Female Divorce Attorneys - Are They Better?

Are divorce lawyers or better in a disadvantage in the practice of family law?

The late singer, performer, and icon of soul, James Brown coined the phrase: "This is a man's world." In many ways, women are pushing to overcome the social and professional constraints established by centuries of man-dominated profession. Many advocates of women have found success and longevity in the area of family law. People tend to forget that the issues of divorce and family law, unlike other legal matters, usually involving a conflict between men and women.

Some time ago, in a conversation about hiring a divorce lawyer, an acquaintance of mine who have experienced a recent divorce, lawyers said that she prefers men. She said she chose her lawyer because she felt "there was a sense of arrogance and no nonsense look." She explained that, in his view, divorce lawyers in most women do not have an aggressive instinct. In my mind, I began to wonder how many people had a similar thought process and the image of divorce lawyers for women.

Here are two reasons why I think that women who practice family law can be an advantage.

1) Nature - On average, women spend more time discussing and thinking about family issues and relationships than men. In other words, we know the family and relationships. It's in our DNA. Women by nature tend to be more interested in relationships and outcomes than men. This translates into success in communicating and dealing with our clients family law and divorce.

2) Aggression - divorce lawyers Women tend to have more of a "take no prisoners" for family law. Some may think it's because we have a chip on his shoulder, or that we are trying to prove ourselves in a profession dominated by men. These assumptions are simply false. Indeed, women have a strong desire to be "correct." Some of my toughest challenges have come from the woman's lawyer. My husband, a school administrator, always prefers to intervene in a fight between two men in front of two females. His reasoning: "Woman fights can be vicious."

I am sure that the erroneous beliefs held by people I know are not uncommon. In the chorus of the song by James Brown, "is a man's world", the singer brings listeners to the conclusion that this man's world "would be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl." What would be the practice of family law without lawyers?
