If you have ever done it, you will know that reuniting after a breakup can be wonderfully romantic; after all, you were and are each others soul mate. Yes, that sounds fantastic, but if the two of you don't approach this reconciliation correctly, the romance is likely to fade very quickly and the two of you will find yourselves in the same cycle of fight and make up that probably led to your breakup in the first place. Unless you are both very immature and like all the attention and the drama, that is not what you want to happen.
With time, a lot of love and a bit of knowledge on better ways of doing things, your relationship can be all that you dream.
Here are a few things that the two of you can work on together:
1. Importantly, decide why you really want to get back together. Loving someone is important but sometimes love just isn't enough if you are incompatible with each other. If that's the case for you, it really is better to end things now as that's the only way you'll ever be able to meet someone who is right for you.
You don't want to stay with a person who makes you miserable all the time (no matter how much you feel for them). Make sure that you aren't considering getting back with your ex just because they have started to date someone else, or because you are lonely. Again, if these are some of your reasons for getting together again, it's doomed to failure and you'll cause each other a lot of useless pain.
2. Even if your reasons for getting back with your ex are genuine, and you think that the issues in your relationship aren't so overpowering that they can't be fixed, there is still another important thing to consider: will you both be willing to make the changes you need to make things work? Even if your relationship isn't plagued with serious problems like abuse, addiction or infidelity, you both still need to be able to face your own demons and those little things you do that cause problems in the relationship. If you are both unwilling to do that, then the relationship can't work.
Nothing will make you feel better and more in love than reuniting after a breakup, it really does add spice and sparkle to a relationship. It's very important though that the two of you don't get carried away with all those warm fuzzy feelings and not face your real problems. If you ignore the problems they will stomp all over those fuzzy feelings, and that's not much fun at all.
